Body Composition Testing/Analysis

A healthy body composition (proper muscle-to-fat ratio) has been associated with longevity and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and other chronic health conditions. Approximately 65% of Americans are overweight or obese, which can increase the risk of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, hormonal imbalances, and cardiovascular disease.

A comprehensive program should include body composition testing (fat & lean tissue ratios)-because thin doesn't mean healthy if you're losing muscle and retaining unhealthy fat. Loss of muscle results in loss of ability to burn calories, which makes it much more difficult to maintain fat loss over time. An imbalance in body composition (gaining too much fat or losing too much muscle) can also lead to serious health problems.

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) measures the impedance or resistance to the signal as it travels through the water that is found in muscle and fat. The more muscle a person has, the more water their body can hold. The greater the amount of water in a person's body, the easier it is for the current to pass through it. The more fat, the more resistance to the current. BIA is safe and it does not hurt.

ImpediMed is a pioneer in the development of bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)- an extremely reliable method for body composition analysis. It’s fast, consistent, accurate and easy to use. More than simple weight or body fat percent levels provided by ordinary scales or calipers, ImpediMed body composition analyzer/scales provide detailed body composition analysis – weight, impedance, body fat percentage, body mass index (BMI), fat mass, fat-free mass and more. This service includes ImpediMed Body Composition Analysis, interpretation, and a printout of your results.

Dietary Analysis

Do you know how many calories you are eating every day? How much fat, sugar or salt is in your current diet? Are you deficient in vitamins and minerals? Based upon the details of your food/beverage intake over a 3-day period we can demonstrate your strengths and weaknesses in an objective, easily understood format. You will be provided detailed information, which will include graphs and charts and suggestions to improve your nutrient intake.

Grocery Store Tours

Learn how to shop like a pro. Do you know which ingredients on the label are harmful to your health or can promote wellness and longevity? Your dietitian will teach you how to read nutrition fact labels to choose the healthiest products for you and your family. You will discover how to interpret manufacturers marketing schemes and become skilled at choosing fresh, wholesome foods, such as fish, dairy and produce. Specialized products will also be discussed, based on your needs. By the end of your tour you will feel comfortable in knowing what to look for in the food label and ingredients list.

Over 15,000 new food products are introduced per year. News media headlines offer conflicting information about what is healthy and what is not. WNY Nutrition will lead a private 60-120 minute tour of your local grocery store to help guide your selection of natural, whole, and organic foods and natural products.

Group Classes

Throughout the year, we offer group classes on a variety of topics, such as weight management, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes management. If you are interested in joining a class or would like more information please contact us. We welcome suggestions for other health-related topics that you would like to attend.

Individual Nutrition Counseling & Medical Nutrition Therapy for Adults or Children

Individual appointments encompass a very comprehensive assessment in which a medical, nutritional, and lifestyle history are obtained, lab values are interpreted, current medicines and supplements are reviewed, body composition analysis, and discussion related to health-related goals. Based on these parameters a specialized nutrition and lifestyle plan is developed. At the end of the consultation you will leave with a written summary of detailed recommendations for dietary change, supplementation, laboratory testing, recommended reading or additional resources, referrals to other holistic providers, and other lifestyle changes as indicated. Menu planning, recipe modifications, shopping education, and dining out and travel may also be included during consultation.

This service includes diagnosing nutrition problems using a variety of techniques, prescribing customized nutrition plans, and providing tailored nutrition therapy to facilitate change.

At subsequent appointments you will be guided in acquiring the skills needed to change old habits and ways of thinking. Your dietitian will provide further education, advice, and new strategies will be discussed to help you get through plateaus or circumstances that make it difficult for you to stay on course with your plan. We will support you in reaching your goals.

Phone & Email Counseling

We strive to attain the same level of professionalism and attention to detail in our phone & email sessions as we would in our office appointments. Please contact us for further information regarding charges for these appointments. Please note that insurance does not usually cover this specific service and only covers face to face visits.

Resting Metabolic Rate Measurement

Allows calorie prescription to be based on each person's unique metabolism.

Seasonal Detoxification

Would you like more energy?…to think clearer?…to sleep better?…to feel more healthy?

Helping the body to rid itself of toxins and restoring the balance of the gastrointestinal tract are often complementary approaches to inflammation management. Every day we are exposed to multiple toxins that exceed our body’s ability to detoxify, causing a buildup. Inflammation is a leading cause of a plethora of disorders and diseases. A detoxification program may be a simple first approach for those suffering from symptoms and conditions associated with metabolic toxicity or inflammation.

The GI system serves multiple roles in the body, including digestive, immune, and barrier functions—all of which dramatically influence health. Anything that negatively impacts the health of the GI tract, such as a high fat/low fiber diet, food intolerance, certain medications, chronic stress, or nutritional deficiencies, can lead to a disruption in GI function—potentially impacting many aspects of health, such as joint health, bowel regularity, immune function, weight, energy level, mood, respiratory function, skin/complexion, digestion, and mental acuity. A comprehensive GI restoration program can support overall health.

Supplement Review

Based upon your laboratory data, diet analysis, medical condition(s), and current medications/supplements we can determine which supplements will be most effective for your health.

First Line Therapy Program

First Line Therapy is a 12-week program designed to address the underlying cause of most chronic illnesses. First Line THERAPY is a system for implementing Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC) for improved quality and reduced cost of care for most patients with chronic illness. THERAPY is based on extensive research demonstrating that many of the chronic diseases associated with aging are largely caused by lifestyle choices.

First Line Therapy is recommended for health problems, such as:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • High Cholesterol
  • Overweight/Obesity
  • Hypertension
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Irritable Bowel Disease
  • Cancer
  • Skin diseases
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Stress-related disorders
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
  • PMS/Menopause
  • Asthma
  • Unhealthy Body Composition

The FirstLine Therapy Difference - It Works!

There are three key reasons that make FirstLine Therapy® (FLT) different than conventional lifestyle programs:

  1. FLT is about more than just weight loss.
    • FLT can help you lose unhealthy fat while retaining healthy, lean muscle.
    • FLT integrates body composition testing (fat & lean tissue ratios)-because being thin doesn't necessarily mean you're healthy.
    • An imbalance in body composition (gaining too much fat or losing too much muscle) can lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, altered cholesterol levels, etc.
    • Loss of muscle results in loss of ability to burn calories, which makes it much more difficult to maintain weight loss over time.
    • FLT focuses on lifestyle factors that are the underlying cause of many health problems.
  2. The FLT eating plan is different.
    • Most diets focus on NOT eating-not eating fat, not eating carbs, or just plain not eating much of anything. With most diets, success is based primarily on will power.
    • The FLT eating plan emphasizes the need to eat, and to eat frequently.
    • The focus is on eating the right kinds of foods-the right kind of fat, the right kind of carbohydrates, and the right kind of protein-all in the right portion size.
    • FLT incorporates a low-glycemic-index eating plan based on the latest scientific research that will help you maintain stable blood sugar and energy levels.
    • According to recent studies, low-glycemic diets are more effective than lowfat diets in treating obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes.
    • People report less hunger and more energy, making it much easier to stick with the program.
  3. FLT incorporates medical foods and dietary supplements.
    • Using appropriate medical foods and dietary supplements as part of this program can improve the effectiveness of the program for you and help you achieve your health goals.
    • Medical foods are designed to address the unique nutritional needs of patients with specific health concerns.
    • Dietary supplements provide targeted nutritional support for specific functions, such as healthy blood cholesterol or blood sugar levels, joint function and mobility, or healthy hormone metabolism.
  4. FLT has been demonstrated to be effective in controlled clinical trials.
    • Most other diets have not.
